The small device was making its normal whining tone he noted as he brought the mug to his lips, the broth of the plomeek soup he found to be fortifying as well as satisfying, somewhat like chicken soup was said to be for humans. Solid food would have to wait of necessity, the Vulcan considered it to be rude as well as disrespectful to eat before the ship's commander although he had been pressed to do so, in the end he had promised to retire to the galley after the meeting; the soup then had been the compromise. Additionally on Konsu's desk before him was set a glass of a liquid he had become quite fond of during his time at the Academy as has been stated on numerous occasions, chilled orange juice with bits of floating pulp. Bolan had left quite abruptly after dropping off his cargo, taking up his station once again outside while the medic had taken his place, she had been quite insistent on checking his status despite his protests; it was Konsu who had the final word though and Saleke had relented at that point. "Your calculations were correct of course." Saleke looked across the desk at the CO as he began picking up their conversation at the point they had paused earlier. "Your 52nd fleet managed to break through Federation perimeter defenses and some made it all the way to the Sol system and attacked earth ... and of course Federation headquarters." Konsu leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms as he watched the Vulcan closely, Konsu's brown eyes didn't have a hard edge to them this time though, he had already queried his contact in Starfleet while Saleke had been ministered to earlier and had received confirmation of his identity. "Doenitz's forces were overrun and he himself died during the attack, it has generally been understood that he committed suicide." Saleke nodded slightly to show he understood even though the whining of the scanner could have been distracting if he allowed it; but as he lifted the mug to his lips to take another sip she had apparently finished her readings and shut off the device to his gratification. "The new Federation government has been quite busy since the end of the war..." Konsu looked around the room as if contemplating the details, as he did so a lock of his mahogany hair slid near the outside corner of his left eye. After a short pause he looked back and resumed. "There have been a lot of publicly aired details of war-crimes trials not to mention the massive rebuilding on several planets that were first occupied by Doenitz then taken by the 52nd fleet after vicious battles." "Including Tellar and Andoria." Saleke noted flatly as he set the mug down and reached for the glass of juice. "Attacks on those two planets preceeded the planned attack on Earth by more than a week, it was noted that many areas were completely annhilated." The Bajoran nodded. "The major metropolitan areas were basically wiped clean down to the ground, the citizenry there that had warning retreated to the shelters in the countrysides and survived for the most part, those that were left..." Pursing his lips he continued. "Those that didn't leave didn't survive." He looked away from Saleke for an instant and then back. "We didn't have it as bad on Bajor though and Betazed came through pretty well, there was a lot of damage but the infrasctructures survived basically intact and the rebuilding is going well." Betazed... Saleke hadn't had much opportunity to contemplate much more than survival for the past seven months but thinking about those planets reminded him of some of his former crew. Dr. Holis Gralen for instance, the scientist had taken over possession of Saleke's mineral collection including his prized Anelurian crystal since the Vulcan had been going on what was considered in essence a suicide mission, before Saleke had left the ship Holis had made him promise that when he returned he would reclaim them. Ammon Ranae the Bajoran security officer, Maraht the Horta and a number of other Betazoids as well including Dr. Riven Mias the mind healer. His train of thought had caused a considerable pause, he looked back at the Bajoran and noted he was being minutely studied. "And the security situation I assume is not common knowledge." Konsu nodded his head. "I can tell you Starfleet ranks have been thinned quite a bit but that's all I can tell you except there haven't been any invasions of which I'm aware." He looked beyond Saleke. "Yes Bella." "You need to wrap this meeting up and let me get this man to the galley, that soup won't last long and he needs some solid food, I think some gorst pudding and erda mash would be good and they won't lie heavily on his stomach." Konsu thought about it for a second before replying. "We do appear to be at a stopping point, Captain I'm remanding you to the tender ministrations of my medical officer, after you've eaten feel free to join me on the bridge, I've already notified the guards they'll no longer be needed." A Vulcan eyebrow lifted at the word 'tender' but Saleke nodded as he rose to his feet, the half full glass of juice in his hand, Bella stepped around and plucked the mug of soup from the desk then turned to the door with Saleke in tow. As they stepped out Konsu leaned back in his chair once more, squinting his eyes in thought. ~ Not that they'd slow you down much probably anyway.~ (Posted by Charles) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 7, Personal Quarters - A/COPS Lt. Tom Jackson - 1923) Tom was relaxing when the call came in from the XO. Jackson sat up and replied "Lt Jackson here Sir". As Jonas Lemar explained he had a few free minutes and could meet with him, Jackson smiled and replied "Where can I meet you Sir?" The commander indicated he would be in his Ready Room in ten minutes. "Acknowledged Sir - be there in ten minutes. Jackson out". Jackson made a last few notes and organized his thoughts. He was a bit concerned that he did not have a lot of solid data but he knew his impressions were on target. (Posted by: Bill West) ===================================================================== (USS HADES - Deck 7, Corridors - A/COPS Lt. Tom Jackson - 1925) As Tom Jackson walked the halls heading to the Ready Room, he was thinking of the possibilities and pitfalls ahead. Popping into his head was the 62nd Ferengi Rule of Acquisition that said " The riskier the road, the greater the profit". Tom smiled and thought to himself ~ Pez would say that would apply here~. (Posted by: Bill West) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 1, Ready Room - A/COPS Lt Tom Jackson - 1940) Tom took the hot coffee from Jonas and sat down across form the FO. To get some time , Tom sipped some of the dark, hot brew. Jackson began his verbal report. "Sir, as expected there was a lot of hesitation on both sides. We were kept waiting till the Romulan contingent arrived" Tom said. (reply: Lemar iyw) Tom continued. "Sir, trade possibilities exist - I suspect that each side will want escorts assigned when in the other's area" Tom added. (reply Jonas IYW) Tom paused and his brow crinkled in a worried look and went on "AN area that concerns me is the exchange of military data. Just how far we should go worries me. I suspect that the Ambassador might want to go a bit more than I personally feel comfortable with" he ended. (reply: Lemar iyw) Jonas thought for a moment and spoke " What about this Chairman Vaebn, and this Senator Terrh. What are your thoughts on them?". Tom thought momentarily. "I believe the Praetor to be honest in his desire to work with us. The Tal Shiar chairman does not seem to be 100% behind this initiative. The senator, well, I honestly don't get a good reading on him" Tom added. (reply: IYW Dr Lemar) "Honestly, I see potential here Sir. We can expand our trade and help Federation;s merchants. I also see possibilities military wise" Tom added, pausing to see what Jonas's response would be. (reply: Jonas IYW) Jonas asked Tom about the ambassador's actions and what Tom thought of them. Jackson looked at his superior officer before replying. "Initially, I suspected Ambassador Nolan of a dual agenda. However, Ambassador Frazier seems to be on the up and up Sir. I see no reason to suspect her motives. Well, maybe she is a little more gung-ho than I think right for these initial moves" T.J. added. Windsong-Trommashere – 1942.5) "We've got to start meeting more often like this. That looks quite delectable, almost as lovely as you." Angeni smiled at him adoringly. She walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist, kissing his spine. She rested her head against him, breathing him in . She let her eyes close gently, then she opened then, moving around in front of him. "Thank you. It was just something I replicated really quick. I figured if this was an emergency meeting, we'd be here for at least a while, so I wanted to make sure everyone was covered with something to eat at least and something to keep ones' energy up...no harsh stimulants in my office." She smiled weakly, her exhaustion showing through her normally chipper fascade. "Angeni, are you getting enough rest? Do you need help with duties in Sickbay? I want you to be honest with me." " No...shockingly I'm fine. I'm more tired today than usual though. I was getting some really bizzare readings while you guys were on the surface, and I've been wracking my brain trying to figure them out." She smiled gently, taking another sip of her tea. "Tell me something, Jon. Would I be forward in asking if...well...if you would like to...after this meeting is done...come to my quarters. I would like to just spend some quality time with you...and I have some questions about various things about your auora reading. I just want to make sense of some things I was getting off some readings, and I'd rather do it in a place that's not flowing with things to affect your sensory imput." (Posted by Kari) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 1, Ready Room – FO Commander Jonas Lemar – 1944) As the Lieutenant took his drink, Jonas had asked his first question – asking for a brief version o events for the day. In response Jackson spoke of a hesitation on both sides, and that they were kept waiting by the Romulans before anything began. Jonas wasn’t surprised by this. It was a classic tactic, leave your foe to sweat a little and give yourself the upper hand. Jonas had no doubt though, that Ambassador Frazier wouldn’t have been swayed by such a tactic. As Jackson began to summarise what had been discussed during the day he said, “An area that concerns me is the exchange of military data. Just how far we should go worries me. I suspect that the Ambassador might want to go a bit more than I personally feel comfortable with.” Jonas took a sip from his tea and considered the Lieutenant’s comments. “I imagine what should and should not be shared during a treaty between two empires is always a tough decision to make, Lieutenant. Thank the stars that people like you and me don’t get to make those decisions. It is a matter for the Council, which I have no doubt Ambassador Frazier will bear in mind while conducting these talks. Remember, whatever she negotiates during these talks will have to be signed and accredited by the Federation President. I doubt she will do anything unreasonable.” Next, Jackson gave his opinion on the Romulans that they had met with. Jonas had known of at least five different members of the Romulan Committee, although clearly he had never met any of them in person. Jackson was definitely at an advantage on him there. “I believe the Praetor to be honest in his desire to work with us. The Tal Shiar chairman does not seem to be 100% behind this initiative. The senator, well, I honestly don't get a good reading on him.” “That doesn’t surprise me Tom. If this Senator and Chairman are so against these talks as the intelligence would suggest, I’d imagine that they would be very guarded indeed.” Jonas was pleased to hear that there was nothing report. It would have worried him if there had been a lot to report on them. It would mean they were being reckless and foolhardy, and men in control of that much power would become very dangerous if they became so. Finally, Jonas’s request, Jackson gave a few initial thoughts on the Ambassador. “Initially, I suspected Ambassador Nolan of a dual agenda. However, Ambassador Frazier seems to be on the up and up Sir. I see no reason to suspect her motives.” Jonas was pleased with that assessment. He had even thought as much himself. Then Tom added, “Well, maybe she is a little more gung-ho than I think right for these initial moves.” Jonas laughed, but knew exactly what Tom meant. “Gung ho isn’t a bad thing Lieutenant. I think it will be that sort of positive attitude that brings these talks to a close in a way that we would want.” (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 10, CMO's Office - CMO Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere - 1946) Angeni was about to say something in response when she watched Baylon walk in. She stood back up, bowing her head politely in his direction. She looked over his face, and she saw a look of...well...unabashed concern. Something seemed to be troubling him, and the nosey side of her wanted to know what was going on. "I'm sorry for the sudden communication, but time is of the essence here. Computer seal the officer door to the CMO's office and deny everyone access except for myself, Counselor Nayati, Doctor Trommashere, and First Officer Lemar- Authorization, Trinin Bravo-Echo-Epsilon-Gamma-Three." Angeni grabbed another stack of padds and placed them on the table. If anything needed to be uploaded or downloaded and passed between everyone here, she wanted to make sure that everyone had enough padds to work with. She knew how she took notes, and she was assured that she'd be walking out with a stack of padds. [door sealed.] She watched as he selected what looked most appetizing to him, and she saw a slight smile break through. She sat down next to Jon, smearing a bit of strawberry jam on a crumpet and she took a little nibble, a serene smile on her face. "I won't keep you all wondering why I've called this very sudden meeting any longer, while I was down on the surface I was engaged in some surreptitious scans for the sake of our security. While there, as I am sure counselor Nayati can attest, I suddenly found myself unable to use my telepathic abilities." "Yes, so did I, On the positive side, my ability to read auras was unchanged, probably because that involves a different area of brain matter as per my people. I have not spoken to Ambassador Frazier yet concerning this. I suspect if we lost our telepathy, she may have lost any of her psychic abilities too." "The exact reason for this was just now determined." She watched as his fingers flew, and suddenly a very familiar, but extremely worrisome waveform filled the screen. "This signal is the reason for this. I'm certain that doctor Trommashere recognizes it, being familiar with the treatment of Betazoid patients. For the counselor's benefit I am going to elaborate." "On Betazed, this particular radiation is used to suppress the natural abilities of the violently dangerous or mentally instable members of our species. It is utilized by security personnel and licensed medical professionals alike, but only in the most dire of circumstances. That is because this radiation can and will eventually kill the person that it is being used to suppress." "Normally the doses are so low and so closely monitored that they are only a danger long after the natural life span of the subject has passed, a few hundred years of exposure by neural emitter is the usual means of use." "Yes, in my training, we have been instructed in that particular treatment." Jon replied quickly and Angeni nodded slightly. She certainly didn't like where this was going. "The Romulans are using it as a blanket affect, which isn't an immediate threat at it's current power levels, although it will likely cause headaches, nausea or other side effects, and I'd estimate it won't become hazardous until you've been exposed at those levels for maybe a collective total of 36 to 48 hours. If you increase this dosage just a little, you can create a significantly shorter exposure time, and if you increase it enough, death or coma can be induced within a few hours." "Since your telepathy was also affected counselor, I do not believe that you are any more immune to the effects than I am although, you may have more natural resistance as a result of your place of origin, although that is yet to be seen and is a clinical guess, as much as I am qualified to make one." "I wanted to make you both aware of this. First because Doctor Trommashere needs to be made aware so that maybe she can come up with an inhibitor or something, and you counselor so that you are more aware of what may be happening to Ambassador Frazier and yourself, should it be a necessity." "I think it's had an effect that I had noticed, yet couldn't figure out at that moment..." She stood up, uploaded her information from her padd of the skewed vital sign readout. "I got a good twenty minute baseline reading before everyone went down. I matched it up with readings from everyones' normal physical. They were basically the same, nothing that I was concerned about." She made the display show everyones' names, next to it the waveform vitals. "Now...about ten minutes after what I could only assume was after you guys had started talks, this happened." She let the recording play through; the vital signs, especially the neural readout began jumping all over the place, and each readout began to flash red with the words; "Outer Limits Reached" displayed in flashing red and white letters. "I figured that the Romulans were using some sort of dampening field to restrict use of Comm Badges or recording devices. I had let Commander Lemar know what was going on. The odd thing was...it never lasted long...maybe about five to ten minutes in duration, then it would stop for another period of time, then it would pick up..." "Oh and doctor, I've also acquired some physiological scans of the members of the Continuing Committee should you need them as well as a series of general physiological scan of other less prominent Romulans. I have no idea if any of that information will be of use to you." Baylon uploaded the rest of that data to the terminal, and with her fingers flying over the display, she pulled a few of the time stamps up, and she let them play. What she saw disturbed her. (NRPG: If I'm going off track, let me know and I'll change it.) "Okay...look at this. During a time period where my readings were flawed, some of the less prominent Romulans were as well, especially in the neural waveform. But, none of the Continuing Committee had the same effect...or should I say as prominent. There's a slight fluxuation, but nothing that would have me as concerned as the rest of those that were down there." "In reaction to this we could do several things. We could move the treaty talks to the Hades. We could insist on shorter spans of time in the talks themselves. We could do what we can to monitor the intensity level of the field itself once we are in it. If it were to rise to levels too high we could cease negotiations immediately." "My concern is what they would do to you down there if they knew that we know about what's going on." She paused for a moment, "It could be a disaster. If they knowingly are doing this, once we bring it to their attention, we could all get placated into believing it'll stop, and then the minute anyone goes down there, it could be an absolute disaster." She took her pupil light out of her pocket and she began to fiddle with it nervously. She went to speak when she heard Jon come in. "We need to have our medical and science departments work together to find ways to negate the affect itself. If we cannot neutralize the affect, we need to find a way to chemically immunize ourselves from the field." "I don't think there's enough time between now and the time the next talks start....." She could feel herself getting more and more agitated when Jons' voice pierced her ears again. "Lt. Trinin, what was your reaction to the telepathic inhibitor field?" asked Jon. (Reply Baylon) "Has anyone heard anything from Ambassador Frazier? What are your feelings about this situation Counselor?" "I was in the room with Ambassador Frazier for the whole time and she did not complain of headaches but only fatigue once we stopped for the day. Could it be that her human part makes her more resistant? If that is the case, then maybe someone on the Hades crew might be more resistant to the telepathic dampening field than yourself Lt. Trinin. Perhaps we could have someone join us who is either full or half Vulcan descent. Vulcan brains and bodies are more resistant to physical damage and some diseases over other humanoid species. I'm thinking of Security officer T'Sol, who is full Vulcan and probably a touch telepath." "That seems like an adequate idea. My thought is, because Betazoids will be most affected by this due to the fact that this is a field primarily used against them, anyone of such decent should be monitored closely, as well as those with any telepathic abilities of any sort...including you Counselor. I want to see just how deep this runs." She went to her desk and she opened a drawer. Rumaging around, she pulled out a dull grey box. Walking over to the pair, she pulled out a set of transmitters. "If it's okay with the two of you, I want to monitor you both very closely to see if the effects of this waveform are diminishing, gone, or are still there in any way. I'll have to speak with Ambassador Frazier and with Commander Lemar." (Posted by Kari) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, CMO's Office – CSEC Lt. Baylon Trinin - 1950) "I'm sorry for the sudden communication, but time is of the essence here." He said as he entered. Once he had cleared the door he said in a slightly louder voice. "Computer seal the officer door to the CMO's office and deny everyone access except for myself, Counselor Nayati, Doctor Trommashere, and First Officer Lemar- Authorization, Trinin Bravo-Echo-Epsilon-Gamma-Three." [door sealed.] Baylon stepped over to the meeting table and took a chair. He then set the Padd down on the desk in front of him. That's when he noticed the drinks and the biscuits laid out for the impromptu meeting. He smiled, then poured himself a cup of the sweet smelling tea and commandeered a pair of excellent looking Biscuits. He had not eaten anything since this morning and now found that his mouth was watering just at the smell of the food laid out before him. ~have to get a proper dinner when I'm done with this.~ he thought. "I won't keep you all wondering why I've called this very sudden meeting any longer," he said. "While I was down on the surface I was engaged in some surreptitious scans for the sake of our security. "Since your telepathy was also affected counselor, I do not believe that you are any more immune to the effects than I am although, you may have more natural resistance as a result of your place of origin, although that is yet to be seen and is a clinical guess, as much as I am qualified to make one." Baylon looked at his data from the scans and compared the time index. "Your guess at the time is exact doctor. This is marked on my index as the time that the Praetor activated his console, just prior to the Ambassador dismissing me from the proceedings." he added. As an after thought he added. "Oh and doctor, I've also acquired some physiological scans of the members of the Continuing Committee should you need them as well as a series of general physiological scan of other less prominent Romulans. Baylon nodded, now that she pointed out some of the details, he did notice a slight alteration in his scans. "What exactly does that mean for a Romulan?" he asked, it looks like it's affecting the limbic region, isn't that the region that controls aggressive behavior?" he asked. (reply Angeni, Nayati) Jon said, "In reaction to this we could do several things. We could move the treaty talks to the Hades. We could insist on shorter spans of time in the talks themselves. We could do what we can to monitor the intensity level of the field itself once we are in it. If it were to rise to levels too high we could cease negotiations immediately." Baylon nodded, "I agree." "We need to have our medical and science departments work together to find ways to negate the affect itself. If we cannot neutralize the affect, we need to find a way to chemically immunize ourselves from the field." "The science department is working on a dispersion field that has been affecting the commbadges and the implants, I suspect that they are well on their way to working out a solution. This, however," he gestured to the display, "is strictly a medical issue that needs to be kept under wraps. That's why the two of you are here with me discussing this now. In a room with a security sealed door. I've spoken with Commander Lemar on this and he and I are in agreement that we can not broach this to the Romulans. To do so could have a few different unwanted affects. First, it could embarrass the Praetor if he is not privy to this which could undermine his position and authority. Secondly, it would put the talks at immediate risk of failure. And no one on this ship wants to bear that burden if the Praetor is truly wishing to turn over a new era of peace between our people. I think this is something we're just going to have to deal with." Baylon supplied. "I don't think there's enough time between now and the time the next talks start....." Angeni started, then her voice trailed off. "Lt. Trinin, what was your reaction to the telepathic inhibitor field?" asked Jon completely back to the original subject of physiological effects. Well it started with an abnormal silence, a sort of static in my head. It didn't take long before I got a terrible headache. Once I left the field there was a very brief sense of vertigo and nausea, but it passed in moments, then everything seemed to be back to normal." Baylon replied. "Has anyone heard anything from Ambassador Frazier? What are your feelings about this situation Counselor?" Angeni asked. "I was in the room with Ambassador Frazier for the whole time and she did not complain of headaches but only fatigue once we stopped for the day. I want to see just how deep this runs." The CMO added, obviously in tune with the counselor's train of thought. Baylon shook his head. "I can't do that. T'Sol is expected aboard the Donatra tomorrow, and I think it would be disrespectful and bad form to alter our security team now. It might tip our hand to the Romulans responsible and they might realize that we've figured out what's happening. That could jeopardize our team if they become desperate or anxious. I can't take that risk." Baylon watched as Angeni rummaged around the office for some specialized equipment. "If it's okay with the two of you, I want to monitor you both very closely to see if the effects of this waveform are diminishing, gone, or are still there in any way. I'll have to speak with Ambassador Frazier and with Commander Lemar." Baylon nodded then. "I'm fine with that Doctor, but I have a great deal to do, is this something we can do quickly? Or at least while I work?" Don’t worry so much about what the Ambassador is offering and what the treaty will entail. We’ll hear plenty about that when the time comes.” (reply: Jackson) “What I need you to focus on is the safety of this ship and its crew. That is my sole concern throughout these talks. If you see or hear anything that might endanger that, I need you to find a way to report it to me at your soonest.” Jonas smiled, knowing that when Jackson had tried to report in to him today he had brushed it off and asked for a report on his desk. He was sure that he wouldn’t do that next time around – providing he was not otherwise engaged of course. (reply: Jackson) “Right, then I think we’re finished here Lieutenant. Take some time to relax, so that you are 100 percent for tomorrow.” Jonas stood up and straightened his jacket. As Jackson made his way to the door he added, “Goodnight Lieutenant.” (reply: Jackson, any) (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 11, Hydroponic Bay Jungle – ACSO Ensign Shayhiloosh - 2112) =/\= Carrow to Shayhiloosh and McKenzie. We've been given the go ahead for our away teams, so we'll be taking two teams down in the morning. =/\= Shayhiloosh's eyebulbs opened very wide in surprise. "We are to go down to Romulus? And the Romulans wish us to be down there? What time are we going?" asked Shayhiloosh. S/he found hirself fairly trembling with excitement. ~I had hoped to investigate their soil, climatic conditions and plant life. I will finally have the chance to do so.~ (Reply Kenneth McKenzie) =/\= Let's say, 0830 in the Science Lounge. We'll get together and move out from there. =/\= "Yes Sir. I will be prepared. What sort of weather conditions should we expect?" asked Shayhiloosh. (Reply Ardena Carrow, Kenneth Mckenzie) Shayhiloosh moved over to Shureshlee where s/he was playing in the Bay with Rosalind Winters and her colorful pet feline. Shayhiloosh explained that s/he would be going planetside on an away team with some of the Science staff. "You must stay here on the ship on your own, Shureshlee. I hope to not be gone for long. You are doing well on the Dreamplane, so even if I am gone during the sleep cycle it is possible that as long as the ship is in orbit around the planet, we might still be able to speak during our times on the Dreamplane." "But the planetary day cycle may not be synchronized to the ship's day cycle, Elder Parent." "No, since the Hades is in orbit, they will not synchronize, but there may be various times when we can access each other if it is necessary. Make sure you get to your classes in plenty of time. Drink plenty of mineral water. Your root development is coming along well so make sure to rest in the Captain's Arboretum and check on the plants there in my absence. They may need tending while I am gone and Captain Sash is still unconscious in Sickbay." Shureshlee sighed and said, "Yes Elder Parent. I will miss you when you are gone." They twined roots in deep affection. "I am very proud of you Shureshlee. You are doing well. I suspect that you are the most intelligent of Arborians I have ever had the privilege to teach, and I have taught a great many younglings." Shayhiloosh main branches swelled with pride and s/he felt well satisfied that Shureshlee would do well for a short time on hir own. I will be prepared. What sort of weather conditions should we expect? =^= came the breezy reply from Shayhiloosh, the Arborian science officer. ~Weather?~ thought Carrow, not really why she hadn’t even thought of that. She quickly activated her monitor to have a look at the extrapolated weather patterns that they had been reviewing from the past 8 hours. “Well it depends where we set ourselves down, but it looks to be warm and sunny for the most part. I can find somewhere with a cooler climate if you’d prefer. We have authorization to put down wherever we like.” (reply: Shayhiloosh) “Well, there’s no reason we can’t do both. See you tomorrow.” (reply: Shayhiloosh) Carrow thought for a moment about sending out a general memo to all of the science department, but she was already off duty, and heading out of the room as it was. She decided she would leave it. She had told the two most important people. They would no doubt contact whoever they wanted on their teams and have them in the right place at the right time. With that, Ardena walked out of the office with her bed and book firmly in her mind. Since he had been given the assignment to work out the permutations of the dispersion field that was in use by the Romulans, Harry had not budged from the three workstations that he had commandeered for the task. In contrast, every other member of the Quantum mechanics team, had long since retired to their quarters or had collapsed from sheer exhaustion and had to be carried to their quarters. This left Harry relatively alone in the lab. His excitement was also a factor in his inability to sleep. He had been working on the gravitational equations between data sets, and was exceptionally pleased to know that his area of expertise, was finally being put to good use aboard the Hades. This was a distinct contrast to what his duties had been aboard the Nimitz during the civil war and While he missed that ship, he was far more pleased to be an active part of a science team that didn't have anything to do with planning military operations. Harry turned away from his console and strode across the room to the second science station, that he was using to work out the nuations for the dispersion field. He had made some unexpected headway a little over two hours ago, when he realized that the Romulans were limiting their nuations to roughly five hundred million combinations, but that all of those were prime configurations. This decreased the actual amount of hard mathematical crunching that he had feared would be necessary to perform by a factor of 100. The source stream for the encryption was now calculable, and all he had to do now was figure out the last few fixed variables that would be needed to resolve the formula, then work out the formula that they were using. After that, he could turn it over to engineering with the algorithm and they could make the adjustments to the sensor arrays and the samplers. Once that was done, the dispersion field would be relegated into a footnote as far as the subspace communications and the implants were concerned. He still wouldn't risk using the transporters, the simple fact that even a slight variation during a transport could be fatal had left Harry decidedly against recommending the use of even modified transporters. There was simply too much of a chance that something could go wrong to risk it. And while the Romulans would be more likely to overlook the communications and implant data signals, since they'd have no way to realize that the Hades had figured out a way to filter and reconstruct the data with a 90% success rate per informational packet, the use of a transporter required a significant energy output that would surely be noticed by a vigilant Romulan monitor. Harry was checking the progress of the prime series algorithm, when the third of his three stations chimed off in a notification that it had completed the calculations he had assigned it. Smiling he turned away from the console conducting the primes calculation and moved over to the console displaying the permutations work. He immediately discarded several series of permutables, simply because he knew that they wouldn't balance out in the end, with the other calculations that he had running. He had run the formulaic factors independently, in order to speed up the over all process. He had already established a series of proofs to check the computer's work against what he knew the master formula should be. As such it allowed him to pare down the results offered by the computer to those that were the most likely to operate inside the mathematical confines that he had judiciously established for comparison. After narrowing his offerings to the gods of higher mathematical functions, he then added them to the growing proofs data base that he was establishing to use to check his final calculations for errors. If all went well, these proofs would quantify that he had indeed figured out a mathematical solution to the problem that they were facing. His primary console chimed a moment later and Harry once again shifted positions as he had several times throughout the night. Again he removed values that he knew were erroneous and dumped the remainder into the proof database. The complexity of the problem wasn't too bad the problem was that the variables were dynamic. In a brief, the situation was this: The Romulan field cased waveform interference with the two signals that were being used. The interference was predictable, and was well defined by established laws governing the actions of radioactive wave dynamics. If they had used a uniform strength and wavelength to accomplish this interference, then Harry would have solved this problem within the span of a half-hour. The Romulans instead had used a dynamic scale, shifting both the strength of the field and the wavelengths used along two very dynamic axis'. It was working out the permutations (or the patterns) that had been so difficult. Once they were known you would utilize the computer's raw number crunching ability to reconstruct the received information by deconstructing the interference in real time. This undoing the interactions of the various troughs and wavelengths as they interfered with the original signals. Since you were simply changing the way the data was being interpreted and not affecting the actual initial interference, there would be no indication on the Romulan's end that any change had taken place. In other words they were effectively decrypting the data that the Romulans were in theory encrypting using an interference code key. Just as in any other type of cryptography, if you could work out the mathematical laws that governed it, and there were always mathematical laws, then you could undo what was done and reconstruct the original data. The third terminal chimed indicating that it had completed the last of the variable factors that Harry had programmed into it and the Ensign moved over to the console and repeated the same process that he had done so many times before during the night shift. He then went back to the primary console, randomly picked any one of the results for the numerous variables and plugged them in to see if they would prove true. The results were positive. He then shifted the variables again randomly and repeated the procedure. Again a positive result. Eight more random tests of his formula proved to be true and Harry was now convinced that he had indeed solved the problem with the forty-seven variable equation and three nested functions that he had initially developed. He had the computer run the evaluation twenty five more times, choosing random results for each variable in the database that he had built. Each time he received a proof positive result. "I've got it!" he exclaimed to the empty room. He took a few minutes to translate the equation into technical terms, so that the engineers would know how to adjust the scanners and samplers so that it would filter the received signals through the algorithm properly, then he sent a complex detailed report on his results to both Lemar and Shayhiloosh. He didn't expect either of them to understand the process or the formula that he had performed, since neither of them were experts in theoretical mathematics and quantum mechanical theory, but at least they would see that he'd been working diligently. As the forward he provided the simpler exclamation that he had solved the problem, provided the adjustment parameters and then added the mathematical proof as an after thought. The simplified technical data he sent directly to Main Engineering with a memo that it was needed to be implemented immediately prior to the beam down of the delegation. Then smiling, he decided to return to his quarters, get a few hours of rest before his 0600 shift began the next morning. It looked complex and though Shayhiloosh could read through it and understand most of it, hir knew s/he could not have come up with it hirself. This type of algorithim formation was a specialized field outside of hir general areas of training, but Ensign Doorman had assured the Arborian that he was capable of using the ship's computer to to work up permutations, eliminating variables and then arriving at a repeatable conclusion. Knowing there was little else s/he could contribute, Shayhiloosh had left Ensign Doorman to it, once the hard data numbers had been input, with the instructions that if s/he could help, Ensign Doorman could contact hir in the Bay during normal night cycle hours. It appeared that Ensign Doorman had been successful, staying up later than most humanoids normally did to finish the assignment. Shayhiloosh sent a short note to Commander Lemar commending Ensign Doorman's hard work. (Posted by Sheila Mayer) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 11, Hydroponic Bay Jungle – ACSO Ensign Shayhiloosh – 0604) After checking with the ship computer system, Shayhiloosh discovered that Ensign Doorman had retired to his quarters, no doubt in exhaustion. Shayhiloosh had done the same to get some rest, making sure that Shureshlee understood what s/he was doing and why. Upon awakening refreshed from resting on the relative quiet of the Dreamplane, Shayhiloosh realized that Ensign Doorman may or may not have been contacted regarding the upcoming away team assignment down to the planet Romulus. Rustling hir branches in self recrimination, s/he decided to rectify that potentially overlooked detail right away. Such intelligent determination deserved reward. Shayhiloosh checked the Science department schedule roster and found that Ensign Doorman was on shift this morning as of 0600. Shayhiloosh tapped hir commbadge with a root. "Shayhiloosh to Doorman." (Reply Harry Doorman) "I have received your report. Excellent work," Shayhiloosh told him. With so much of the ship's calculation power being snatched up by astrometrics, particle physics and quantum mechanics, the least that harry could do was give a mathematical hand to the geologists on board. He had just completed a subset of equations that defined the spread factor for the plates when his commbadge chimed. =^=Shayhiloosh to Doorman.=^= Harry tapped his commbadge as he sat upright. He had been bent over a console now for the better part of a quarter of an hour, having been browbeat to assist when he had showed up early for his shift. "Go ahead sir." It had been a while since he worked them the way he had yesterday in the holodeck. But, though his biceps remembered the work vividly, it felt as though it had been eons ago. He now walked the outskirts of the engines, stopping every now and then to chat with one of his engineers or to check for progress and general maintenence. There seemed to only be two settings for the engines aboard the Hades. Dull or explosive. Every once in a while a call would come for a basic malfunction in a replicator, but non came this morning. He expected that none had occurred, and if they had, opps had taken care of it first. Uncharacteristically, he was completely up-to-date with reports and logs and now searched for something to do. It was nice to have Dana around, though. She was probably the reason he hadn't fallen behind in the paperwork, and he thanked her silently for it. He probably owed her, but he didn't quite know her well enough to come up with anything she might appreciate. ~That's pathetic,~ he thought bitterly, ~You don't even know your ACEO well enough to know her interests?~ He smiled and nodded and Henri Croix as he strolled past and was pleased to be met by the Frenchman's fast grin. Norm had given Nerrah Kusto forced early release. The young Bajoran had shown up for work this morning, his nose heavily bruised and his pain-killers clouding his features. Norm figured Kusto could use a day to sleep, and understood he might like to spend some time with a certain counselor. The thought of Kusto's affections for Ana brought back memories of Regan. She had been onboard for such a short time, and yet he still found himself missing her. The warp drive wasn't fully powered but was on 'Hot" standby which meant only a trickle of the matter/antimatter fuel was reaching the intermix chamber, this kept the intermix temperatures within working minimums and insured that should the need arise the warp drive would be available within a matter of seconds rather than the half-hour it would take for a 'cold' start. Even had the Hades been orbiting a friendly or neutral planet the conditions would be the same, normally the warp drive was only powered down completely when in spacedock for obvious safety precautions. While in hot standby then the fuel input rate and power output were monitored hourly to insure proper function. The whistling stopped as he looked away from the monitor and entered the readings into the padd he was holding in his left hand, everything was in working order so far. Start of shift inspections were always the ones he hated the most, almost always there was some abnormal reading somewhere which he would have to trace down, today was no different, the nano-particle readings were high meaning there was an imbalance in the fuel ratio. The imbalance could be caused by a number of things including a faulty power annonomneter splice, this would have to be reported. Turning from the console he looked around and noticed the chief overseeing operations from his normal spot near the center of the engineering deck, waving his hand and giving a piercing whistle he gained his attention. (Reply: Norm) "Aye chief." The twenty eight year old, sandy haired engineer took the two steps to the ladder and scooted down quickly taking two steps at a time, the last three feet he had the intolerable urge to slide down the handrail with his hands and skip the rungs but he squelched it, he was pushing it as he was, he could possibly plead guilty by reason of high energy levels on the multiple rungs but skipping steps was a major safety issue. The last two steps he took slowly and carefully then made his way over to Chief Harper, holding the padd out for him as he came near. "I've got some abnormal readings in the intermix reactor chief, routine I'd think but enough of an issue I thought you'd better know about it, the problem should be isolated within the next two hours." (Reply: Norm) "Should I make my checks on the impulse reactors first and finish my initial ckecklist or do you want me on this right away?" Dale asked matter of factly. "The impulse checks will take about a half hour at the most." Lots of things were happening today, and Jonas was actually looking forward to it, not least of all, his trip to the Donatra. He had received his official invitation from the Romulan Commander yesterday evening. He was expected around about 0930, but Jonas still hadn’t informed the relevant crew that he wanted to attend. Given that his security chief was otherwise engaged, he had already invited Ensign T’Sol to accompany him. He also wanted to take with him Lieutenant Harper and Lieutenant Ammon, but in this he had a dilemma. The engineering chief had recently been through a medical trauma, and as such his ability to move about with a little impaired. That said, he was still the foremost expert on all things engineering that Jonas had. And then there was Lieutenant Ammon. She was very pleasant, and Jonas had on more than one occasion been able to socialise with her. As such, Jonas was quite surprised to learn, from Jason Miller who had heard it on the ships grape-vine, that she hadn’t enjoyed her experience with the Romulans at all. Now, Jonas didn’t want to put her in an uncomfortable situation, but she was his tactical expert, and therefore the most qualified to assess their tactical abilities from this seemingly innocent tour. So, Jonas was torn between playing the good cop or the bad cop. ~I wish Sash were here~ he thought with a shake of his head, knowing that Sash was always willing to play bad cop in situations like these. As he stepped out on the bridge he saw that Lieutenant Carrow had shown up to the command. She was actually a fairly recent addition to the ship, but despite her lack of experience onboard, she had taken care of Gamma shift. That was, until the injury of Captain Sash. Now both Lemar and Carrow shared the bridge shifts between them, leaving Gamma shift to a suitable replacement. “Good morning Lieutenant. Shouldn’t you be packing your science kit?” Jonas grinned as he spoke jovially, approaching the command seat so that he could speak more quietly with her. “Well, I was passing, so I decided to take a few minutes to double check the weather conditions. I ended up reading a report or two while I was here.” She smiled and waved a PADD at him. “If you want the chair, I’ll get moving.” “Oh, don’t move on my account.” Jonas insisted, although he knew she had better places to be that here on the bridge. Despite his insistence, Carrow left the bridge after a brief farewell. Jonas had wished her will on her away mission, and settled into the chair. ~Right then, where is Miller with my schedule...~ Jonas looked around the bridge, as if the Yeoman would jump out at him from any doorway. Since the accident a few days ago, things in engineering had gotten a little heavier than usual. With the extra work at maintaining two separate engineering sections to maintain power to the entire ship, Dana was finding herself pulling double shifts to cover. And with the Chiefs recent down time, she was trying to keep as much of the work off of him as possible. She had seen the chief arrive for the alpha shift as usual, and since then he had been walking around the engines, seeming to soak up the atmosphere. It was said that the chief often gained a satisfaction from just being close to the throbbing machinery, his own pride and joy like a father to his children. Dana actually thought it was the EM fields given off by the plasma polarisation that had an effect on his cybernetic components, but whatever. Who was she to tell someone else they couldn’t romanticise it. Just as she was checking on the repairs to the power umbilical, she heard a whistle and looked to the upper level to see one of the engineers trying to flag down the chief. “Aye chief,” he shouted as he slide down step ladder and made his way over to Lieutenant Harper. Dana decided to move over an investigate when she heard, “I've got some abnormal readings in the intermix reactor chief, routine I'd think but enough of an issue I thought you'd better know about it, the problem should be isolated within the next two hours.” (reply: Harper) She now recognised the engineer as Dale Grey. She’d worked with a few times before her recent appointment to ACEO, although she hadn’t seen much of him for at least a fortnight. As Dana neared the two she said, “Strange, I didn’t notice anything on my inspection at 0600.” Giving the chief time to review the PADD, she waited until it was offered to her then took the PADD and looked at the data that Grey had come up with. “Should I make my checks on the impulse reactors first and finish my initial checklist or do you want me on this right away?” Dale asked matter-of-factly. “The impulse checks will take about a half hour at the most.” Dana handed the PADD back to Dale and looked at the chief, “I don’t know about you Chief, but I definitely think this takes priority.” (reply: Harper) Turning to find the nearest engineering technician without a priority task, her eyes landed on Gary Coleman. “Coleman, take over the morning checklist that Dale was handling. I need him on something else.” “Sure thing Dana,” said Coleman casually as he got up from his seat and started up the ladders to the upper level, where Dale had come from originally. Looking back toward Harper and Grey, Dana clasped her hands together and said, “Right then, let’s get started.” (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (Romulus – Ch’Rihan Medical Facility, Transportation Sector – Dr. Alyss Sh’areh - 0812) Alyss was feeling quite excited about the prospect of going to the Federation ship. She had made sure she was prepared ahead of schedule and in the transporter room with plenty of time to spare so that she could be early for her appointment, rather than be late. She was in the Ch’Rihan Medical Facility, the largest medical and research facility on the planet. All varieties of research in medical technology went on here, and Doctor Alyss Sh’areh was an expert in her field of knowledge. Stepping through the doorway, she held herself with an air of superiority that befitted someone of her station. She was the foremost expert on Angossian Physiology in the Romulan Empire, and while this was not normally something that she would be commended for – given that the Angossian race rarely had any dealings with the empire – but in this particular instance it was just what the doctor ordered ... so to speak. She held her case close to her as she passed the centurion at the door and turned to him. “I am ready. Please contact the Federation ship.” Her case was filled with a number of specialised equipment designed specifically for the testing and treatment of Angossian males, more specifically the genetically enhanced ones. In truth, her teams had designed the equipment in the hope that they could utilise similar genetic engineering techniques for their own devices, although up until now they have never obtain a live subject to study. Now she had the perfect opportunity to have a look at one, although from the sounds of it he was barely living. “As you command,” The centurion left his post near to the door and moved to the control interface. The green chevrons and symbols flashed on the screen before him, and after he entered his access code, the screen flashed and moved allowed him to access the various commands available. Accessing the central communications directive, he pressed the final sequence and spoke clearly. “Federation vessel, this is the Ch’Rihan Medical Facility. Doctor Sh’areh is ready to transport to your vessel.” (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 6, Science Lounge – CSO Lieutenant Ardena Carrow - 0814) What had started out to be a good morning, was starting to become a great morning. She was on top of her schedule...for once...and she had gotten through another polite conversation with the first officer that didn’t leave her looking like a fool. To top it all off, weather conditions were looking great and she was about to head down to the surface of Romulus. After leaving the bridge, she had headed straight to her original destination – the science labs. She had a number of tools and utensils to pick up from her office, and then she had to figure out who was in what tea, and what team was heading where. As she walked the corridor that lead to the science section, she could already hear a rustle of excitement and commotion. She rounded the final corner that led her to the science lounge, and low and behold around 7 or 8 science officers were standing around chatting, some of them looking over tricorders and scanning devices, others simple talking about what they hoped to do that day. Spotting her leafy ACSO, she smiled at a few of the other science officers before sliding over to Shayhiloosh. “Good morning Ensign. Is this everyone?” (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 1, Main Bridge – COPS Lt. Maraht - 0816) Maraht's OPS console chirped at him. It indicated that there was a message coming up from the planet. "Commander Lemar, there is a visual and audio signal coming in from Romulus. Shall I put it on the main viewscreen, Sir?" asked Maraht (Reply Jonas Lemar) "Aye Sir," answered Maraht. He pressed some buttons to display the signal on the main viewer. The planet that they were orbiting was replaced with the stern face of a Romulan centurion. To Maraht he seemed to disapprove of them. Whether the centurion disapproved of them as a Federation vessel or because they were not Romulan, Maraht did not know. Perhaps the centurion did not like the idea of anyone that was a Romulan doctor transporting to the Hades to be among what he perceived of as the enemy. The centurion spoke, biting off his words with clipped precision. =/\= Federation vessel, this is the Ch'Rihan Medical Facility. Doctor Sh'areh is ready to transport to your vessel.=/\= ~We have a Romulan doctor coming on board our ship? I wonder why?~ Maraht felt surprised and tamped down his anxiety. His phalangi fringe merely trembled but did not betray his agitation with a single ripple. ~I hope Security keeps a strong close phalange on this doctor,~ thought Maraht. He felt a little nervous about the idea of a Romulan doctor treating anyone in their Sickbay. ~But it could be part of the treaty negotiations. Maybe they wish to trade medical knowledge as a show of trust,~ surmised Maraht. He kept quiet and waited to find out what would happen. (Posted by Sheila Mayer) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 1, Ready Room – FO Commander Jonas Lemar – 0817) Jonas had come to terms with the fact that Miller wasn’t going to jump out on him at minute, so he decided to flick through the status reports that were waiting for him. It was then that Maraht called out to him. “Commander Lemar,” the Horta had said. “There is a visual and audio signal coming in from Romulus. Shall I put it on the main viewscreen, Sir?” ~Unexpected~ he thought as he gave a nod to the OPS chief and looked up at the screen. The orbital view of the planet was replaced by the face of a Romulan. From what Jonas had learnt about Romulan rank structure, he appeared to be a Centurion. There was no polite greeting or welcome as the Centurion spoke. =^= Federation vessel, this is the Ch'Rihan Medical Facility. Doctor Sh'areh is ready to transport to your vessel =^= ~I presume Doctor Sh’areh is the Romulan specialist~ Jonas had expect some sort of fore-warning before the arrival of the doctor and found it a little disconcerting that the Romulans weren’t keeping them in the loop 100 percent. “We’ll send you the coordinates for transport momentarily.” There was no actual response from the Centurion, unless you counted the quiet grunt that he made. The screen soon flicked back to the orbital view. Again, Jonas was surprised. Clearly this Romulan didn’t really want to talk. “Lieutenant Maraht, transmit the coordinates for transporter room one to our friendly centurion.” (reply: Maraht) As Jonas stood up, he began to make his way to the turbolift. “Advise Mister Rosanov that I am on my way to escort the Doctor personally.” As the turbolift doors opened, Jonas made a move to step inside. “Please have Counsellor Nayati and Doctor Trommashere meet me in sickbay. You have the bridge, Lieutenant.” (reply: Maraht) The turbolift doors closed and Jonas announced his destination. He had been leaving the Maraht in charge of the bridge a lot lately. ~I’ll have to get his thoughts on that~ Jonas wondered how the Horta Lieutenant was coping with the extra responsibility. He was new to the OPS role, but he had taken to it well. Was he ready for yet for responsibility? (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 6, Science Lounge - SciO Ensign Harry Doorman - 0818) Harry had arrived early, as had all the other scientists that had been selected to participate on the away team. He had been mixing with the various others in the department, discussing the mathematics behind some of their experiments. He had learned more about microbiological biodiversity than he had cared to, thanks to the concerted efforts of Doctor Morgan to monopolize his time. He was therefore very pleased when the CSO walked in and the entire room fell into a sort of muted roar, rather than a loud obnoxious mob ready to come to blows over divergent evolutionary theory or some such. He picked his way through the crowd, finally able to excuse himself from the privations of Doctor Morgan, and made his way to the CSO and her assistants. "Good Morning Sirs, " Harry said smiling, "I don't know about all of you, but I am more than ready to get planet side and star some scans. I do however have one small favor to ask, please save me from Doctor Morgan." (posted by Daniel Greene) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 6, Science Lounge – ACSO Ensign Shayhiloosh - 0819) Shayhiloosh was in the Science Lounge, with a few roots wrapped around several tricorders. Eyebulbs blinking rapidly with excitement, s/he was working mightily with only a minor amount of branch rustling to control hirself. Lt. Ardena Carrow addressed hir and asked, "Good morning Ensign. Is this everyone?" Shayhiloosh blinked again and stuck out all hir eyestalks at a higher elevation to more clearly observe the entire room. Pulling them back in, s/he addressed the Chief of Science, assigning one eyestalk to her. "I believe so, Sir. I sent out a memo to everyone in our department, thinking to gather as much data as possible. There are a few who are staying on board to work with the direct uplink for our tricorders with what will no doubt be a massive influx of data. There is no telling how long on the planet we have until the Romulans decide to rescind their dirtside invitation. So the more personnel we have down on the planet to do scans, the more data we will be able to gather in a more efficient manner." (Reply Ardena Carrow IYW, Any) Just then, Ensign Harry Doorman approached Shayhiloosh and Lt. Carrow. "Good Morning Sirs," Harry said smiling. "I don't know about all of you, but I am more than ready to get planet side and start some scans. I do however have one small favor to ask. Please save me from Doctor Morgan." Shayhiloosh was startled. Hir eyebulbs widened and hir branches rustled noticeably. Nervously s/he asked, "You seem very composed about this. Is Doctor Morgan becoming cannibalistic? There were rumors on Arboria Prime of such things among certain humanoid groups. Could Doctor Morgan be reverting to some sort of primitive state?" (Posted by Sheila Mayer) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 1, Main Bridge – COPS Lt. Maraht - 0819) "We'll send you the coordinates for transport momentarily." The Centurion grunted in response and then terminated the visual signal, though the carrier channel was still open. The screen flicked back to the orbital view. "Lieutenant Maraht, transmit the coordinates for transporter room one to our friendly centurion," ordered Cmdr Lemar. "Aye Sir," acknowledged Maraht. He pressed the correct buttons and sent the coordinates down to Romulus. As Jonas stood up, he stepped toward the turbolift. "Advise Mister Rosanov that I am on my way to escort the Doctor personally." As the turbolift doors opened, Jonas made a move to step inside. "Please have Counselor Nayati and Doctor Trommashere meet me in Sickbay. You have the Bridge, Lieutenant." "I will Sir," answered Maraht. Commander Lemar left the Bridge. Maraht rumbled his way over to the center chair after removing his short raised platform. "Ensign Fredericks, take the OPS position." The blond haired OPS officer nodded from his secondary OPS post on the Bridge. He made his way toward the front of the Bridge and pulled up a chair. "Maraht to ROsanov." =/\= Rosanov here, Sir. =/\= "You are about to receive a visitor from Romulus in Transporter Room One. Commander Lemar is on his way as a personal escort now." =/\= Aye aye, Sir, I will be ready. ROsanov out. =/\= "Maraht to Dr. Trommashere and Counselor Nayati." Nervously s/he asked, "You seem very composed about this. Is Doctor Morgan becoming cannibalistic? There were rumors on Arboria Prime of such things among certain humanoid groups. Could Doctor Morgan be reverting to some sort of primitive state?" Harry looked at the Arborean with a shocked look on his face, unsure exactly how to answer his superior officer without making it into a serious miscommunication. "No, nothing like that, "Harry said, "It's a turn of phrase, it means he's talking my ear off…." Harry stopped for a second and then added, "… which is another turn of phrase to denote the fact that he is talking about something completely beyond my comprehension or beyond my desire to listen any further and that was a humorous means to convey that information to you both.. It was a sort of warning that he is on a roll today." Harry replied. "As far as I know, Doctor Morgan does not eat other members of his species or any other sentient species at all for that matter." harry added, hoping that would allay the questions that the Arborean might pose to him next. So early?” Bree hoped it wasn’t bad news. She hated bad news, and it was often the sort that happened out of hours. “Thank you. I’ll take it now.” She waited only a few moments before the screen blipped to show the aviary insignia of the Romulan Empire. As she pressed the access key, the message envelope opened and displayed an image of the Praetors aide, Ejuil. Instantly, Bree wished she had taken time to make herself more presentable. She did not realise this would be a live connection, and in an instant she stepped to one side, adjusted her red curls as best she could without a reflective surface, and returned to the screen. =^= Good morning madam Ambassador. I trust you slept well? =^= The Praetor’s aide smiled, and Brianna could help but think that didn’t look right on him. She hadn’t figured him for the smiling type, but more the skulk in the shadows type. “Actually, I did. Thank you Ejuil, though I had to admit I did not expect a message so early from you. Is everything alright?” Bree tried to appear as though she was not so surprised to hear from him. He hadn’t expected to here from the Romulans until later in the morning, and then she expected just a time and place for beam down. A salutation and question of courtesy is not what she had expected. =^= Everything is as it should be, Ambassador. I am contacting you with an invitation from Praetor himself. He would like to invite you and your envoys for breakfast in his private chambers. =^= ~Breakfast?~ Brianna couldn’t keep the smile from her lips; mostly because the invite was so unexpected, but also because he had made an effort to refer to it as breakfast. Breakfast was a Federation reference, although she wasn’t 100% certain what the Romulan term was for the meal. ~He’s really making the effort~ she thought before quickly answering in the positive. “That would be lovely. At what time should be ready?” =^= Around 0900 by your standard time, if that is convenient. Beam down to the same coordinates and I will be there to escort you. =^= “0900 sounds good. Thank you Ejuil, I look forward to it.” The message soon blipped off, and Bree imagined that Ejuil was glad so he could drop his smile. ~That’s not entirely fair of you Bree, he might be a very nice person~. As she got up from her personal station, she headed toward her closet, wondering whether to adorn her official ambassadors uniform, or to go for a more casual approach and wear something more comfortable. As she perused her wardrobe, she tapped at her comm. badge. ~Better let everyone know what we’re up to~. “Lieutenant Trinin, this is Ambassador Frazier. I’m sorry to bother you so early, but I thought I should keep you apprised of my plans.” She pulled out a bright blouse and held it against her, looking herself up and down in the mirror. (reply: Trinin) ~Too casual~ she thought as she put the blouse back and looked for another top she could wear instead. “Paris, Raizel, and I have been invited for Breakfast with the Praetor. I have to say I was quite surprised, but I accepted without hesitation.” Her hands landed on a long flowing dress that she had replicated two evenings ago to wear on the holodecks. ~Hmmm... maybe~ (reply: Trinin) ~...maybe not~ she thought with a sigh and put the dress back. “We’re to beam down at approximately 0900. If you feel the need to accompany us, please do so.” (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 5, Transporter Room One – FO Commander Jonas Lemar – 0821) Jonas entered the Transporter room with a quick march. He didn’t want to keep this doctor waiting, nor did he want to keep his own doctor and counsellor waiting. After a quick glance and a smile he said, “Energize Mister Rosanov.” In an instant, he could hear the controls being keyed, and very soon the high pitched whine of the transporter beam began to sound. Seconds later, a figure materialised on the transporter platform. “Welcome aboard Doctor. I am Commander Jonas Lemar, commanding officer of this vessel.” Still holding her case and looking as professional as ever, she stepped down from the transporter pad. She had not expected the ship to be so bright and airy, but her expression remained unchanged. “Thank you commander, I am Doctor Alyss Sh’areh. Please show me to your patient, I would like to get started right away.” Jonas tried and failed to hide the surprised expression from his face. ~Not one for small talk then~ he figured as he turned and stepped toward the door. “Right this way then,” He walked quickly into the corridor and began to head to the nearest turbolift. ~This is going to be fun~ he thought, hoping that the rest of the Romulans he would meet today would not be so hard to talk to. Inside, Alyss was pleased to be here, but her sense of duty was the reason for her frosty exterior. So she held her head up high, and walked off in pursuit of the Commander. ~This is the chance of a lifetime. Harry added. "Oh good," Ardena said, coming in the door with the plate of brownies that was her contribution to the science department's unhealthy breakfast. "I do so hate it when my coworkers eat each other." She handed Shayhiloosh a beaker of sparkling water, "Since brownies probably aren't you thing," she teased the Arborian. (Replies Doorman/Shayhiloosh.) "I've spoken with the head of Scientific Institute in the Capital City who is our sponsor. It will be one security personnel from the Romulan Government, one from the ship, one of her professors, one of her students, and then our scientists to each group. The Romulans will be providing transportation to our requested sites. So, I've broken you up by specialization, but if you want to reorganize, I won't stop you." She knew some people just preferred working together. She'd rather have people who were happy working together and guarding each other's back in what she still considered Enemy Territory. (Replies if any) "I've been assured by Security they'll be keeping eyes and transport locks on us at all times. I open the floor." She said with an intentionally overly dramatic gesture, as she stole one of Susan's danishes. (Posted by Lorna) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 6, Science Lounge – ACSO Ensign Shayhiloosh - 0825) Ensign Doorman helpfully explained that these words he had spoken were merely expressions or turns of phrase and that Shayhiloosh should take them as humorous, not literally. Relaxing hir branches, Shayhiloosh nodded an eyestalk at Ensign Doorman. "As far as I know, Doctor Morgan does not eat other members of his species or any other sentient species at all, for that matter," the science officer added. "Oh good," Ardena said, joining Shayhiloosh and Ensign Doorman with a plate of something for what Shayhiloosh could only assume was a part of the science department's early morning meal. "I do so hate it when my coworkers eat each other." She handed Shayhiloosh a beaker of sparkling water. "Since brownies probably aren't your thing," she said, smiling at the Arborian. "Thank you Ensign Doorman. I appreciate the explanation. Sometimes the language used by humanoids can be interesting to interpret," answered Shayhiloosh, accepting the beaker of water from Lt. Carrow. "I appreciate you thinking of me, Sir," said Shayhiloosh to the Science Chief, slipping a root into the vessel. "I take it that you also are being humorous this early in the day?" asked Shayhiloosh of Lt. Carrow, hir leaves shaking gently with quiet laughter. (Reply Ardena Carrow, Harry Doorman, Any) Though Shayhiloosh had fed and rested for a while before joining the rest of the Science department in the Lounge, s/he was aware that potential dehydration when out in the sun was never a good idea. Any moisture was always an excellent plan. "I've spoken with the head of Scientific Institute in the Capital City who is our sponsor," Lt. Carrow informed them. "It is her request that we include one of her students in each of our parties along with our escorts. It will be one security personnel from the Romulan Government, one from the ship, one of her professors, one of her students, and then our scientists to each group. The Romulans will be providing transportation to our requested sites. So, I've broken you up by specialization, but if you want to reorganize, I won't stop you." "I had wondered if our hosts were going to let us walk around unhindered," said Shayhiloosh. "But on another root, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some guides to point out any possible dangers." (Reply Harry Doorman) "I've been assured by Security they'll be keeping eyes and transport locks on us at all times. I open the floor," said Lt. Carrow with a dramatic flourish of her arm, as her hand reached out to grasp one of the danishes off of a nearby plate. Shayhiloosh extended all three eystalks down at the deck of the Science Lounge and seeing no holes opening in the floor, decided Lt Carrow must mean something else. Confused, s/he looked at Ensign Doorman and Lt. Carrow and blinked, cocking one eyestalk at them quizzically. I’m sorry to bother you so early, but I thought I should keep you apprised of my plans.=^= Frazier's voice sounded. Baylon flung the towel casually over his left shoulder and picked up his commbadge which rested on the small bench nearby. He pressed it between his thumb and forefinger to activate it. "Trinin here Madame Ambassador, It's never too early. How can I be of assistance to day?" he replied even as he thought, ~And what plans are you hatching now?~ =^=Paris, Raizel, and I have been invited for Breakfast with the Praetor. If you feel the need to accompany us, please do so.=^= She continued. He glanced at the chronograph. ~30 minutes~ For a brief instant Baylon wondered if Lemar had spoken to her about the situation that they had uncovered during the last visit to the planet. Either way, he was being given a choice of participating or staying here on the Hades. With everything that was going on, he'd rather play the third wheel, than be completely out of the loop. "Thank you Ambassador, I appreciate the chance to tag along. Should I dress in my uniform and discharge my duties as a security officer, or should I dress casually? I didn't get much of a chance to meet the Praetor or the other leaders of the Romulan Empire yesterday and so I'm not certain what I should wear." he replied. She didn't really give a rat's butt what they said about her, but she was growing concerned that it might adversely affect the Captain when he came back into power. She'd learned long ago that gossip was just someone's right brain trying to comprehend what was unfathomable to their left brain. Gossip about so-and-so wearing sandals in the winter because it's not what you would do. Gossip about Suzi dating Freddie because you didn't understand what she saw in him. Gossip about the Captain's Yeoman caring about her boss, because they didn't have a relationship with their own boss that was similar. *Obviously* in their paradigm, people could only care about people who were of similar ages, similar ranks, similar jobs, or having an illicit affair of some sort. The truth was, she respected the Captain a great deal, felt she had a lot to learn from him.. and yeah, okay, he was a hunk, but he was a hunk way out of her reach. The grape vine had it that Commander Lemar had called in a Romulan doctor to prove to the Romulans than he hadn't done nasty things to his Captain to get power. She doubted the accuracy of the facts, but she'd suspected the gem of truth was there was a Romulan medic incoming. Sure enough, the woman had been beamed aboard this morning. Sickbay had been spic and spanned to death overnight and she was probably going to get tossed out real quick. But, while those in blue were distracted, she had a few minutes. "Okay, look Captain Devan Sash, I'm sure you're having a very nice dreamtime," the smile that seemed to curl up at the sides of his mouth now and then was the indicator, "but enough is enough. We're in the middle of Romulan space, negotiating a very important treaty, and Ambassador Hair-for-Brains is negotiating it!" She then added in a forceful hiss, "Stop ditching your duty and wake the hell up!" Her words didn't seem to have any more impact than any of her other's had over the last several days. "Damnit it Sash, if you don't wake up and do your damn job, I'm ratting you out to my mother!" She couldn't think of a viler threat and she was out of time anyway. The doors of sickbay parted to show the Romulan visitor and the acting CO. Time for her to make like an Arborian and leave. She slipped past the brass after a salute to the officers and a head-bow to the Romulan. She had better get the kits ready for the scientists that were abandoning ship anyway. (Posted by Lorna) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, Sickbay – FO Commander Jonas Lemar – 0826) “My expert field is Medical, you know.” Jonas had commented while in the turbolift, trying to start some kind of rapport with the Romulan. He had to admit, the silence was becoming a little uncomfortable. She couldn’t help but feel like Dr. Sh’areh’s eyes were burning into him. “I presume you were not the best in your field, which is the reason for your position in command?” she had asked bluntly. When Jonas had looked at her, she had offered him a slight smile, but only a brief one. She had looked away and then stared at the doors, waiting for the cab to stop of the doors to open. As the turbolift doors opened, Jonas stepped out while trying to figure out if he had just been insulted or not. “Err...this way.” He walked the corridors, deciding it best to not say anything further. He didn’t want to give her any more opportunity to belittle him. She clearly had a superiority complex, which was unusual for a Romulan ... not! Less than a minute later, Jonas had reached the familiar doors to sickbay. As he stepped in he waited in the main bay for Nayati and Trommashere to appear. She hesitated, but finally lay her hands on what she had decided to wear. “Let’s keep it formal wear. Things just get complicated when it comes to civilian clothing.” She gave a shrug and moved away from her closet and toward the bed. (reply: Trinin) Laying down the uniform on the bed she took off her comm. badge and said, “Then I’ll see you shortly. He had just finished when the CSO entered and injected a bit of humor into the conversation with, ""Oh good, I do so hate it when my coworkers eat each other." She handed off a plate full of brownies to one of the other scientists. "Since brownies probably aren't your thing," she said, smiling at the Arborian as she offered the Shayhiloosh a beaker of sparkling water. "You're quite welcome," Harry replied, still smiling. Lieutenant Carrow drew everyone's attention, by just slightly raising her voice enough to be noticed. The hum of conversation died down quickly as she spoke, "I've spoken with the head of the Scientific Institute in the Capital City who is our sponsor," Lt. Carrow informed them. "It is her request that we include one of her students in each of our parties along with our escorts. It will be one security personnel from the Romulan Government, one from the ship, one of her professors, one of her students, and then our scientists to each group. The Romulans will be providing transportation to our requested sites. So, I've broken you up by specialization, but if you want to reorganize, I won't stop you." Harry wondered exactly what Lieutenant Carrow thought his particular specialization was and with whom he should be teamed. He was a theoretical physicist and mathematician, and as far as he knew the only one on the ship. He worked with just about everyone aboard in the department, helping them develop working mathematical models to prove or disprove their theories. And normally his time was jealously horded by the astrophysicists or the stellar mechanics geeks in the Astrometrics department. For him to actually get an opportunity to work closely with the planetary sciences group on their studies of Romulus and the associated system was a rare treat. And one that had not escaped the notice of several dozen not-as-lucky members of the department. Still raw numbers and data pattern recognition were two of his strongest skills and they would no doubt come in use once the teams started beaming raw data back to the ship. Harry would be working on certain scans to fine-tune some rougher mathematical models for several of the planetary scientists as well as help organize and direct data traffic flow in such a manner that it could be retrieved and coherent later. "I had wondered if our hosts were going to let us walk around unhindered," said Shayhiloosh. "But on another root, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some guides to point out any possible dangers." "Well I for one am surprised that they've even given us the chance to step foot on the planet to collect scientific data. We'll be the first federation science team to ever step foot on the planet." he added, still smiling at the thought of discovering some hidden mathematical proof that somehow lay hidden in some crystal formation or other natural occurrence on the planet. "I've been assured by Security they'll be keeping eyes and transport locks on us at all times. I open the floor," said Lt. Carrow with a dramatic flourish of her arm, as her hand reached out to grasp one of the Danishes off of a nearby plate. Harry notice Shayhiloosh look down at the floor with a bit of an apprehensive sag to her eyestalks. it took him a moment to realize why the Arborian was doing so. He leaned in closer to the ACSO and said quietly, "That's another turn of phrase. it means that the discussion is now open for comments and questions." he explained. (reply Shayhiloosh) "Do we know where we will be beaming down yet Lieutenant?" Harry asked Carrow. He was hoping for a certain type of environment, which would be perfect for some of the more demanding aspects of the data collection that some of the Vulcanologists and tectonic scientists had tasked him with. being able to fulfill the requested data scans would get his name in at least a half dozen papers as a contributing scientist and help rebuild his credibility in the scientific community. (reply Carrow) There were both some excited gasps and a few redolent sighs at the news as some of the team realized that the sites would be perfect for their work, while others realized just the opposite to be true. A few scientists shifted teams to better their chances at gathering data more pertinent to their particular fields of study. For Harry's part, he was pleased to be assigned on a team with Shayhiloosh, and the actual location didn't prevent him from performing any particular tasks, it just meant that he'd have to do them a little differently. He leaned in closer to the ACSO and said quietly, "That's another turn of phrase. It means that the discussion is now open for comments and questions," he explained. "Thank you Ensign Doorman. That is very helpful," said Shayhiloosh in a grateful whisper. "Do we know where we will be beaming down yet, Lieutenant?" Harry asked Carrow. (Reply Ardena Carrow) "I will field test the data uplink first, once we are transported down to the planet, to make sure it is stable," said Shayhiloosh. "Then, once I give you all the go ahead, you may all start scanning and gathering data depending upon your field of expertise, if that is all right with you Lt. Carrow? I was uncertain if you had something else in mind Sir." (Reply Ardena Carrow) The scientists shifted teams a bit and others expressed concern or excitement depending on where their beam down coordinates were located as per their specialized field of study. Shayhiloosh found s/he was on the same team as Harry Doorman. "I had hoped to be on the same team with you Ensign Doorman. I am delighted to see that we will be coordinating some of our data together." Shayhiloosh knew how important Ensign Doorman could be on the planet with his ability to format algorithms according to patterns for climate and weather conditions, geological events, water flow and crop growth, just to name a few things. Ensign Doorman appeared pleased as well. "I am very excited Ensign Doorman," said Shayhiloosh, blinking all three eyestalks rapidly. "We will be the first Federation teams to look explore Romulus. I am anxious to see their plant life and taste the soil." (Posted by Sheila Mayer) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 8, Holodeck 2 – CSEC Lt. Baylon Trinin – 0826.30) =^=Let’s keep it formal wear. Things just get complicated when it comes to civilian clothing.=^= "Understood Ambassador, in which transporter room are we assembling?" he asked. (reply Frazier) "I'll see you there, Trinin out." Baylon grabbed his sweat clothes and quickly shrugged into them. "Computer end program." Immediately the pool and all its associated components dissolved and were replaced by the familiar black and yellow grid pattern of an empty holodeck. Baylon hurried from the holodeck to his quarters, where he quickly replicated a formal uniform, as indicated by the Ambassadors and meticulously added his ribbons in their proper place. There were ribbons on his formal uniform that were not readily recognized by most members of the UFP. These dated back to his time in the Kimdan conflict and some minor commendations from his participation in the Andorian resistance during the early days of the civil war. He was allowed to wear them because of a special provision that he had acquired under the command of Captain Saleke. He normally chose not to wear them, but something told him it wouldn't hurt to wear them today. Once he was changed, he hurried off to meet the Ambassador and her envoys. ~This is going to be a very interesting day indeed.~ he mused as he made his way to the transporter room. Suite one will do fine.” She really didn’t know if it mattered, but seeing as she already knew how to get to that one, she would head there with her two colleagues. =^= I’ll see you there, Trinin out =^= Laying the uniform down she said, “I’ll see you shortly. Frazier out.” (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 5, Transporter Room One – Ambassador Brianna Frazier – 0856) ~Well I think that’s another record Bree~ Bree told herself as she walked into the transporter room. In little under half an hour, she had managed to shower, curl her hair, apply her facial moisturiser, get dressed, re-curl her hair, put on her makeup and get herself where she needed to be. In addition, she had also found the time to contact Raizel and Paris quickly to advise them of the plans for breakfast. Upon entering she saw that her two colleagues were already here. ~How do they...~ she started to ask herself in disbelief. “You two were quick,” she commented with a smile, glad to see that she wasn’t the only one breaking records this morning. Walking across the room she saw the Transporter Chief standing at his station, looking up at her as the newest entrant. “Good morning Mister Shurikov. How’s traffic today?” “It has been fairly busy this morning, miss Ambassador” he replied in his thick Russian accent. With a smile and a nod, Bree moved over to her two colleagues to await the arrival of the security chief.
